Toy, 2D Animation, 00:28 sec, 2021.
Ajay Surendran’s digital artworks conjure surreal images that are inspired by the quotidian. In his work, ‘When hope falls down,’ the thoughts and decisions that culminate in the ups and downs of one’s life are shown through the metaphor of a rising and setting moon. The artist himself is the protagonist here. He performs the act of switching on the light and then kills it with a stone. This continues in an endless loop. This cycle of hope and hopelessness depicted here continues throughout a lifetime.
In his second work, he is shown as a person controlled by a toy. His artwork is set in the night, and the dark colour palette offers a grimy setting. The darker side of reality is explored through a change of vision. The visions we see through our eyes create a series of sensations, thoughts and images that occur in our minds. Accompanied by the mysterious background scores, his images create an air of occultism through their infinitely continuing visual loops. His artworks express the emotions he has gone through in a dream-like state.
